Aromatherapy

What is aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy is a holistic treatment said to help improve both physical and emotional well-being and can be traced back 5,000 years to the early Egyptians. It works with the pure properties of plants through their essential oils . These oils are extracted from various parts of the plant – petals, seeds, leaves, twigs resins and roots.

What are the benefits of aromatherapy?

Benefits of aromatherapy include*

  • Relief from stress, anxiety and tension

  • Feelings of deep relaxation

  • Improved mood

  • Improved sleep

  • A general sense of health and well-being

What happens during a treatment?

To ensure your continued well-being, all treatments begin with a full confidential consultation which enables your therapist to ensure aromatherapy is right for you and to prepare a suitable treatment plan. It also gives you a chance to ask any questions. If you have an aromatherapy massage we will first discuss which area will be treated. During treatment you will be covered with towels or a blanket for your comfort and warmth, with only the area being treated exposed.

How long is a session?

At Yorkshire Body Clinic we offer a range of aromatherapy massage appointments so you can choose the best one for your needs and time availability. The choice is 90, 75 minutes (full body), 60 minutes and 45 minutes. Different methods of application of aromatherapy are also available and may be recommended depending upon your individual requirements. This may be a tailor made cream or lotion (which could be incorporated into a reflexology treatment or used at home), a compress, or a blend for bath, shower or inhalation.

How many treatments will I need?

No two people or treatments will be the same and it depends on whether the treatment is for remedial purposes to address specific concerns, or as part of a health maintenance and/or stress relief programme. For remedial purposes an initial course would generally be recommended whilst a session every month to six weeks should be sufficient for non remedial purposes. Your therapist will discuss a treatment plan with you in consultation and review it at each subsequent session.

How will I feel after aromatherapy?

As aromatherapy promotes the body’s own healing mechanisms some type of response is generally expected. For most people this will be a sensation of well-being and feeling extremely relaxed, energised or rejuvenated after the session. Again however, everybody is different and some people may experience other responses such as feeling cold or emotional or nauseous. These are also signs that the healing process has begun and will usually dissipate within 24 – 48 hours.

Your therapist will have based and adapted your treatment on information provided in consultation and it is recommended that you drink plenty of water the day of treatment and the previous and following day to minimise the chance of more uncomfortable responses.

Can everyone enjoy aromatherapy?

This therapy is suitable for most adults but there are certain conditions where aromatherapy should be avoided or your doctor’s consent may be required before treatments can commence, for example if you have diabetes. If you are unsure whether this will apply to you, please do not hesitate to contact me.
